چکیده

This paper determines the effect of voluntary contributions on the output and quality of nonprofit performing arts organizations, specifically classical ballet companies. The effect of ticket revenue on ballet companies is also estimated. The study uses newly presented data consisting of firm’s reported income, divided by source, and weekly wages of ballet dancers obtained from collective bargaining agreements. Using dancers’ wages as a proxy for quality, the study finds that contributions seem mainly to support increases in quality. However, there is a combined effect of increasing output and quality with ticket revenue. The source of variation in donations is also investigated by estimating the probability that a city has a resident ballet company. Together, these estimates may explain further data presented that shows ballet dancers salaries increasing both in magnitude and standard deviation (across firms and dancer ranks) over time.

‘Making a Difference’: Labor Donations in the Production of Public Goods

When PRC is not used, the establishment will favor setting low wages. High wages can ...

Capital-Skill Complementarity and Rising Wage Inequality in the UK

The consensus in the literature investigating the causes of increased wage inequality in developed nations since 1980 is that skill-biased technical change is responsible for the widening of the wage distribution. A shortcoming in this literature is that technical change is commonly determined residually; that is, those changes in relative wages unexplained by other factors are attributed to ch...

Ballet as a movement-based contemplative practice? Implications for neuroscientific studies

There is a rising scientific interest in the neuroscience behind contemplative practices (see e.g., Vago and Silbersweig, 2012 for a review), including movementbased practices such as yoga and tai chi. Given that, it becomes important to ask how such contemplative practices differ from Western movement practices such as dance. In both dance training and contemplative movement, one learns to con...
